In September 2014, during Iris Smotrich’s term as Mayor, she formed an advisory group with the primary focus on providing resources and information to the members of our disabled community. This group is comprised of representatives from some of the Valley’s non-profit organizations such as The Braille Institute, County of Riverside and individuals knowledgeable in the fields of the hearing impaired, Autism and ADA compliance.
The City of Rancho Mirage strives to provide services to assist our disabled residents and visitors. Along with this new Resource List, the City offers several other services for the disabled:
- Rancho Mirage has always provided hearing devices for people attending Council meetings and special programs, both at City Hall and our Library, as well as someone to do signing, if needed.
- RMTV provides “open captioning” of our City Council meetings to our home viewers and, to date, Rancho Mirage is the only city in the Coachella Valley to offer this valuable feature.
- The City’s Wolfson Park, located at DaVall and Frank Sinatra Drive, has a braille-marked trail for our visually-impaired and blind residents/visitors. As part of the remodel of our Rancho Mirage Community Park, located at 71-560 San Jacinto Drive, the City is installing playground equipment especially designed for disabled children. The park is scheduled to reopen in the fall of 2015.
With the assistance of this advisory group, the City of Rancho Mirage will be diligent in meeting the ever-changing needs of our disabled community and will ensure that the information is current and easily accessible. We hope to widen the awareness of those with special needs to our Rancho Mirage residents and our Valley at large and to ensure that everyday life is better and easier for those with challenges.
