The State of California enacted "Megan's Law", giving residents access to certain information about "High Risk" and "Serious" registered sex offenders. Information on sex offenders classified as "Other" or whose sex offense was adjudicated in juvenile court is not subject to public disclosure.
The Department of Justice categorizes sex registrants as "High Risk Offenders, Serious Offenders and Others." "High Risk" offenders are those who are convicted of multiple violent crimes, including one violent sex offense. The City of Rancho Mirage does not have any "High Risk" sex registrants. A "Serious Sex Offender" is someone who has been convicted of a specific felony sex offense or a misdemeanor child molestation offense. "Other Offender", is someone who has been convicted of a lesser crime, such as pornography, indecent exposure, misdemeanor sexual battery, or committed their offense as a juvenile.
Sex offenders are required to register with the local law enforcement any time they are released from prison, move to a city or change address, within five days of the event. They are also required to register annually, within five working days of their birthday, and a new photograph is taken. All of this information is entered into a database that can now be accessed online, or onsite at local law enforcement agencies. The purpose of the Megan’s Law Database is to allow members of the public to protect themselves and their children from sex offenders.
Sex offender information in the Department of Justice "Megan's Law" database is now available to the public online at http://meganslaw.ca.gov/disclaimer.htm Search results will provide the registrant's physical description, last known address, a map of the location, and the specific sex offense(s) that required the person to register.
