Home Improvement Program

The Home Improvement Program (HIP) is a Citywide residential rehabilitation program, funded through the City of Rancho Mirage Redevelopment Agency’s “Set-Aside Funds” and administered by Housing Authority staff. The goals of the HIP are to maintain decent, safe and affordable housing units by offering assistance for residential rehabilitation/repair to residents who are in very low to moderate income categories.

The HIP offers four grants for funding repairs for qualifying applicants and/or HIP approved items that impact the health and safety of the residents’ living conditions:

  1. Emergency Grant Component, with a maximum lifetime cap of $12,000, provides the qualifying household with a grant for emergency repairs for heating, electrical, plumbing, etc.
  2. Matching Grant Component matches the applicants’ expenditures on a dollar per dollar basis, up to $3,000.
  3. Energy Conservation Component provides up to $3,000 for repairs related to energy-efficiency.
  4. Energy Conservation/Matching Fund Component matches the applicants' expenditures on a dollar per dollar basis, up to $1,000 for repairs related to energy-efficiency.

Repair work items may include, but are not limited to, the repair and/or replacement of air conditioning units, heating systems, electrical, plumbing, roofing and extension or construction of sewer laterals. Residents interested in participating in the HIP or obtaining more information should contact City Housing Authority staff at (760) 770-3210.
